‘Many more former gymnasts are entitled to compensation after an injustice has been done’ | Other sports

A report on the compensation scheme for former gymnasts who have fallen victim to transgressive behavior during their career is being made public today. This is confirmed by a KNGU spokesperson after reporting in Trouw. “The report will be released on Monday and then the director will also be available for an explanation,” said the spokesperson.

After the Unequal Leggers report, in which research agency Verinorm demonstrated large-scale abuses in gym sports, the Central Office for Complaints Management in Healthcare (CBKZ) set up a committee to determine who is eligible for a financial compensation of 5000 euros for the suffering . The committee will publish a final report on Monday.

Trouw has already seen the report. According to the newspaper, the report mentions more examples of abuse and shows that many more former gymnasts than previously thought are eligible for compensation for misconduct by trainers.

The newspaper writes that a total of 171 applications have been submitted, of which 166 have been granted. According to Trouw, that number is significantly higher than the 100 women that were taken into account in October 2021 when the financial compensation was announced. In total, it will cost the gymnastics union and sports umbrella NOC-NSF about 830,000 euros – more than three hundred thousand euros more than expected. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport reportedly paid the costs for the procedure, according to Trouw.

Of the 171 applications, ten related to sexual abuse, 144 to physical misconduct and 168 to emotional abuse – for many athletes, multiple categories applied, the newspaper reports.
