The chance of a burglary during carnival is forty percent greater than the days before. In Kielegat (Breda) the risk of burglary is even more than twice as high during carnival. The police warn of an increase in burglaries this weekend.
In Lampegat (Eindhoven) and Kruikenstad (Tilburg) the burglary risk increases by 64 percent and 50 percent respectively. It is striking that in Oeteldonk (Den Bosch) there is a slight decrease in the risk of burglary during carnival. This is evident from figures from Interpolis.
The increased risk of burglary is not just because people are away from home. People who have had a drink also pay less attention to strange behavior in the neighborhood, experts say.
Warning
The police have been warning for years about the increased risk of burglary during carnival. More burglaries are also expected this weekend. The police therefore share tips on social media to prevent burglary if you are away from home during the party:
- Make it look like someone is home. For example, leave the lights or TV on and ask someone to clean up your mail.
- When you are away, always lock the door properly (turn the key) and leave a lamp on.
- Tell your neighbors where you are and ask them to call 911 if they see anything strange.
- Turn on a lamp in your garden, burglars don’t like to be in the light.
- Do not show on social media that you are on holiday or celebrating carnival.
