Do your lips feel chapped and dry even though you are constantly using lip balm? This can speak of a lip balm cycle, begins the cosmetologist and founder of Blue Lagoon Beauty Sini Virtanen.

– The function of lip balms is to moisturize the skin of the lip area. However, question marks have been raised about the daily use of lip balm, and there is often even talk of a lip balm cycle, where the lips feel dry despite the daily use of lip balm.

The reason can be found in the ingredient list of the lip balm.

– If the lip balm contains drying substances, the lip balm may have a drying effect.

These drying ingredients include fragrances, dyes, preservatives and castor oil. If the product contains castor oil, it says “ricinus communis” in the ingredient list.

Perfumes and aromatic substances are usually labeled as “parfum” or “aroma”. You can identify the dyes by the marking starting with CI.

– I myself suffer from very atopic skin and I have noticed that some lip balms seem to worsen the condition of my lips. The best options for my own lips have been very natural products, which typically do not contain the drying substances I mentioned, Virtanen advises.
