Many explosives from world wars found on the coast
“Almost 280 explosives were defused on the coast last year, the highest number in the past five years,” said provincial councilor Kurt Himpe (N-VA), based on information from Federal Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder.
“During the past five years, the municipality of Middelkerke has been a frontrunner. No fewer than 326 interventions were carried out on that territory. This was followed by Nieuwpoort with 201 interventions and in Koksijde there were 127 interventions,” says Kurt Himpe. “With the results of the recent survey by the Agency for Maritime Services and the Coast, Koksijde will probably be a frontrunner in 2022.”
