The vacant building of the former Christian primary school De Triangel in Emmer-Erfscheidveen is being sold. The municipality expects to put the property up for sale after the summer holidays.
The building on Kanaal A Noordzijde in the village between Emmen and Emmer-Compascuum has no longer been used as a school since mid-2021. Then De Triangel, which was called the Harm Atenschool from 1964 to 1985, closed due to a lack of students. With the closure of De Triangel, when it was merged with the Braakhekkeschool in Emmer-Compascuum, 107 years of Protestant education in Emmer-Erfscheidveen came to an end.
In January this year, the CDA party announced during a meeting in the town hall that the area around the school had become a kind of hangout for young people. As a result, local residents were regularly bothered by noise. Alderman René van der Weide (Wakker Emmen) then indicated that Emmen tries to limit the nuisance, but that some nuisance cannot always be prevented. At the time, he was unable to indicate what the municipality was planning to do with the building.
That is now clear. “We want to put this property on the market through a public tender through a real estate agent,” a spokeswoman said when asked. “We are preparing this now. We expect to be able to put the building on the market after the summer holidays.” In many other villages in Emmen, empty school buildings are being demolished. Why doesn’t that happen in Emmer-Erfscheidveen? “The building is in too good a condition to be demolished.”
