Many Berliners say: Not without my mask!

Despite the fact that mouth and nose protection is no longer compulsory, hardly anyone goes topless.

Since Friday, Berliners have been allowed to shop without a mask again. But only a few dare to go into the shops topless.

“90 percent of customers still come with a mask,” says butcher shop owner Karsten Kretschmer (61) from Buckow. The fear of infection is still too great, especially among older customers.

In the neighboring Edeka branch on the lower street, you only see a few customers without mouth and nose protection. Managing Director Björn Fromm (37): “We recommend that our customers and employees continue to wear a mask, but it is voluntary and that’s right.”

Matthias M. (51, left), car mechanic from Lichtenberg: “It’s definitely a feeling of freedom. I couldn’t breathe properly even with the surgical mask on.” Ullrich Heller (72) from Buckow: “As long as the incidences are so high, I think the abolition of the mask requirement is irresponsible” (Photo: Ralf Günther)

Retailers, catering operators and hairdressers, for example, can also voluntarily decide whether to let customers into their shops topless – they can determine this through their domiciliary rights. Despite the new relaxation of the law, the mask requirement can still apply in some companies.
