Awarded by second division side Burnley
Coach Erik ten Hag has spoken out in favor of loan player Wout Weghorst staying at Manchester United. When asked if the 30-year-old could stay with the English record champions, the coach said (quoted via “The Athletic“): “Naturally. I think he has a very good command of many elements of football.” Weghorst has been on loan from second division club Burnley to Man United since mid-January and will continue until the end of the season, after a loan to Besiktas had been terminated prematurely. However, there should not be a purchase option.
Weghorst has been a seed since arriving and has made 18 appearances in all competitions to date, scoring two goals and providing two assists. Ten Hag stressed that the striker has played a “big part” in the rise of the “Red Devils”, who are third in the Premier League, in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, as well as winning the EFL Cup (2nd place) at the end of February :0 against Newcastle) won. The coach particularly praised Weghorst for “doing a really good job for us in pressing”. He also “takes on other positions, his combination game is really good”. And further: “He makes good movements, he creates space for others, he is also good in the build-up game, so he really contributes to the performance of this team.”
Antony ranked 2nd: Manchester United’s most expensive purchases
During his presentation, Weghorst promised “that I will give everything for the club as long as I am here”. He also stressed that he feels privileged to come to Man United. The former Wolfsburg player is under contract with his regular club Burnley until 2025, where he would be one of the most valuable players in the current squad with a market value of 14 million euros. It is unclear how high a possible fee for the Dutchman could be. When he went on loan to Besiktas last summer, it was said that the club had secured a purchase option for 10 million euros.
Ten Hag, meanwhile, has pointed out how important it is to take part in the “premier class” with regard to transfers in the summer. Man United is attractive even if it doesn’t take part in the Champions League, but “of course we’re more interesting”. He also said: “I want to make my point clear: we have to be in the Champions League. A club like Manchester United has to play in the Champions League for there to be no misunderstandings.”
