Manchester United: Ralf Rangnick resigns – focus on Austria

Officially

Ralf Rangnick and Manchester United are now going their separate ways – the “Red Devils” officially confirmed this on Sunday. “Ralf Rangnick has announced that he will not continue as a consultant for Manchester United due to the high demands of his new role as Austria coach,” the club said in a statement.

Rangnick confirmed the decision during a press conference of the Austrian national team, which he coaches from June 1st. “We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his service as caretaker manager over the past six months,” United said. The 63-year-old originally signed a contract with the Red Devils that ran until 2024.

Rangnick took charge of Man United in his capacity as caretaker manager on Matchday 14 in seventh place and ended the season in a disappointing sixth place – he was subsequently to act as a consultant. Erik ten Hag from Ajax Amsterdam, who will compete in the Europa League with one of the most expensive squads in the world in the 2022/23 season, has been signed as the successor to the coaching bench.

Rangnick starts his new job with great anticipation. “I’m really looking forward to the task,” he said in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, where the ÖFB team is preparing for the upcoming games in the Nations League. Rangnick announced many talks with the Austrian national players for the coming days. In addition to opening opponent Croatia on Friday, world champion France and European Championship semi-finalist Denmark are also waiting in the demanding Nations League group. The competition is good preparation for qualifying for the European Championships, but also an opportunity to bring the “will to win” and “energy” onto the pitch. When selecting the squad, Rangnick clearly put the performance principle in the foreground – and not about merits from the past.
