Alternative Pickford?
In view of the immovability of David de Gea’s role as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper over the years, the ever-recurring exchange theater around the 31-year-old has habitually receded into the background. The relationship between the “Red Devils” and their longest-serving professional survived the worst transfer antics. Now it’s time to say goodbye again. And it might even come surprisingly quickly.
As in the past, de Gea’s contract period until 2023 is actually not a good fixed point. United also have an option for a further season after the end of this contract. You don’t have to let the goalkeeper go for free. The difference from the last time when this was the case: England’s record champions seem to be considering whether a free transfer would not even make more sense this time.

2018/19 season
Like the newspaperTheTelegraph‘ reported, Man United are weighing whether to take the option of another season at all, or rather look towards the payroll and draw up a new plan early on. In terms of salaries, the current fifth in the Premier League table has recently seen a significant increase in personnel costs, as the club announced during the week. With the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and the transfers of Jadon Sancho and Raphaël Varane, for example, expenses for employees increased by more than 19 percent last season, the equivalent of just under 70 million euros compared to the previous year. United’s bill also weighs on a net loss of almost €130m.
Pickford for de Gea? Years of transfer poker between United & Real
Since de Gea last received a new working paper in 2019, he has received a salary that is said to amount to £350,000 a week, maybe more. For the current season it could have been reduced because of the missed qualification for the Champions League, but it remains astronomical either way, and it would remain so even if the option for a contract until 2024 was drawn. The national goalkeeper Jordan Pickford traded as a (cheaper) alternative (28) from Everton FC could start a new era in the United goal next summer.
For de Gea, on the other hand, an engagement with Man United would end, which would then have lasted twelve years. The Spaniard was as good as gone in 2015. Only because the papers for a move to Real Madrid came too late on Deadline Day of the year did a transfer to the “Royal” fail. Such a thing came up again and again as a result. In 2017, de Gea once again reached an agreement with Real, which coach José Mourinho blocked in Manchester. The advertising continued in 2018, and in 2019 the possibly last extension followed with the goalkeeper at United.
