Manchester United interested in Weghorst – Besiktas irritated by parting gestures

Forward castling after Ronaldo departure

“Wout Weghorst never ceases to amaze”, was the headline in the Dutch regional newspaper “De Twentsche Courant Tubantia“, from which the rumor about an alleged interest of Manchester United in the former Wolfsburg emanated on Saturday. The 30-year-old Besiktas loanee to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at the Red Devils; Word quickly got around and the Turkish club, which brought Weghorst from Burnley who had been relegated, coolly stated that things couldn’t be done that easily.

After the 2-1 home win against Kasimpasa on Saturday, Weghorst posed emotionally in front of the fan block, patted the Besiktas coat of arms on his shirt and remained on the pitch thoughtfully for a while, which was interpreted as a farewell gesture in Turkey. “I don’t know why Weghorst said goodbye to the fans, why he took such a step,” Besiktas director Ceyhun Kazanci later told NTV Spor (quoted via “milliyet“). “There is no clause in our contract with Burnley that provides for a half-way return or departure. Our contract expires at the end of the season.”

Kazanci added: “If Manchester United or any other team wants Weghorst, they will meet Burnley. Burnley will then contact us to discuss the terms of the split. If we accept, the contract is terminated. Otherwise he has nowhere to go until the end of the season.” In that case, Besiktas expects financial compensation.

United and Burnley talks over Weghorst – Aboubakar to Besiktas?

There have apparently already been discussions about Weghorst on loan between Burnley and Man United. “The Athletic” reports on the first knocking of the record champions at the Clarets, where Weghorst’s contract is still valid until 2025. Coach Erik ten Hag is a fan of the national player, who scored twice for Oranje at the World Cup. Eight goals in 16 league games is the previous yield on the Bosphorus.

A signing at Old Trafford, even if only for a short time, would be a remarkable step for Weghorst, after he had avoided going into second division with Burnley by moving to Istanbul. Besiktas is said to have even secured a purchase option for 10 million euros for next summer.

In the event that Besiktas actually lets Weghorst go, an old acquaintance should switch back to the “Karakartallar”. According to information from the portal, Vincent Aboubakar (30)Foot Mercato“, which also reported on Weghorst’s upcoming change with reference to its own information, be the successor solution. This would also close a circle in other respects. The longtime Besiktas striker is still at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo has moved and is believed to have ousted Aboubakar from the team entirely. Ronaldo’s post in Manchester could be taken by Weghorst, and Aboubakar in Istanbul.
