Berlin (AP) – Manchester City fans can now marvel at the iconic celebration of Sergio Aguero forever. A statue honoring the former star striker was unveiled on the night of May 13.
It shows his ecstasy exactly ten years ago after what was probably his most important goal for the Citizens when he scored the winning goal in the 93:20 minute of play in a 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers on the last day of the 2011/2012 season and in a thrilling season finale City shot to their first championship title in 44 years – and snatched the trophy from city rivals United.
“I’m very grateful to the club for creating this statue in recognition of my footballing career in Manchester. It’s very special,” said the former Argentina striker and City’s record goalscorer, whose contract was not renewed after ten years last year. He moved to FC Barcelona but had to end his career at the age of 33 due to heart problems. He suddenly collapsed at the end of October 2021 in the 40th minute of Barça’s league game against Deportivo Alavés.
The statue of Aguero, located on the east side of Etihad Stadium, was constructed from thousands of welded pieces of galvanized steel. At night it is illuminated with blue light.
