Man who kissed Máxima: ‘It started as a joke’ | show

Many fans of the royal family managed to shake hands with the royal couple and their three daughters in Maastricht today. But one man managed to kiss Queen Máxima, no fewer than three times. Herr Wasbauer glowed with pride.

In the afterthought of the NOS on King’s Day in Maastricht, he told how he succeeded. His action wasn’t even planned that way, he confessed. “Last week at a birthday party, friends asked me to come along to watch. I said: ‘I would like to get a kiss from Máxima.’ As a joke,” says the man.

Wasbauer continues: ,,We have been standing there for an hour and a half and then jokes are made. Such as: ‘Yes, if Máxima comes, I will ask for a kiss’. And that’s how it happened.” The three kisses did not follow each other fluently, as can be seen on television images, but they were indeed there, an ANP photographer also recorded. In all likelihood, Mr Wasbauer is the only one from the audience in the Limburg provincial capital who managed to kiss the queen.

‘Unforgettable’

After all the festivities, King Willem-Alexander thanked everyone in Limburg for an ‘unforgettable’ King’s Day. Around 1.15 pm the program for the royal family in Maastricht was over after more than two hours. In his word of thanks, the king also briefly paid attention to the corona crisis, the flooding in Limburg and the situation in Ukraine.

“This has been in the pipeline for two years. What’s in the barrel has not soured,” the king began his story, because the celebration with the royal couple would actually take place in 2020. ,,Two long years of individual corona suffering and collective chagrin. Two long years in which Limburg was hit hard by the corona crisis and also suffered a flood disaster.”

“We are deeply grateful that we can celebrate this in peace, in the knowledge that a few hundred kilometers away in Ukraine, those poor people have not been given freedom,” the king said. It was the first time in two years that the birthday of the king, who turned 55 this year, was again organized without corona measures. André Rieu and Rowwen Hèze, among others, celebrated his birthday.
