Man who killed cyclist (85) in Schijndel released again

The driver from Den Bosch who was arrested last week because of a fatal collision in Schijndel has been released again. The 28-year-old man has already been released, because it is not in the interest of the investigation to keep him longer. He remains suspicious. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service (OM) has made this known when asked.

The Bosschenaar drove over a cyclist in Schijndel on August 23 with his van. He then drove on. The victim, an 85-year-old man from Boxtel, did not survive the accident.

‘Not afraid of repetition’
The driver has therefore been released, but the investigation is ongoing and he still remains a suspect, the spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service adds. According to witnesses, the resident of Bossche drove recklessly and the police have determined that he has committed several traffic violations. However, it is questionable whether he could be detained longer, for example because of the risk of recurrence, the Public Prosecution Service said.

The accident was captured by multiple security cameras. The images show that the van came from the direction of Sint-Michielsgestel, hit the cyclist from behind and then drove recklessly in the direction of Den Dungen. According to witnesses, the driver must have noticed something of the collision.

Camera images helped police
Thanks to the camera images, the owner of the van could be traced. That was not as easy as it sounds, the police said earlier. “We have images of the company car, but the quality is not good. After some puzzling, the last digit of the license plate was found. That led us to the suspect of this fatal accident.” The suspect was arrested a week after the accident.

The 28-year-old man was expected to be brought before the examining magistrate, but that did not happen. The spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service: “An arraignment is not a goal in itself, for example, there must be a good legal basis to bring someone to court.” That could be the use of alcohol, but that could not be determined a week after the accident. The fact that the man did not report himself is not included here. The spokesman for the Public Prosecution Service: “That is no reason to bring someone before someone as a punishment or possibly to detain for longer.”
