Man who died after falling from van came from grandparents’ wedding party

At their golden wedding party, Janus and Jeannette van den Beemd heard on Saturday evening that their grandson had fallen from a moving bus. He was seriously injured on Bredaseweg in Rijsbergen and later died in hospital. “This is incomprehensible”, says Janus and a day later, when he and his wife come to look at the site of the accident.

With tears in their eyes, 73-year-old Janus and 68-year-old Jeannette look at the place where it went wrong. The couple from Rijsbergen came to have a look on their bike on Sunday morning. “We are very shocked. It is impossible to explain how we feel,” says Janus, visibly upset. “We now want to see what happened.”

“I’m going home before it goes wrong.”

The fiftieth wedding anniversary was celebrated late on Saturday evening in the Marktzicht conference center in Rijsbergen. “I’m going home before things go wrong,” Janus repeats his grandson’s words. “He had an affair with his girlfriend. Then they went home together.” The party continued for a while afterwards.

Shortly after, a cousin also went home on the same road. “The party was long over by then.” He saw the car of the 31-year-old victim and went back to the banquet hall. He warned the victim’s mother. He rushed to the scene of the accident and is said to have been taken from the police tape to the scene of the accident by a local resident on the back of a bicycle.

“It would remain a greenhouse plant forever.”

Once in the hospital, Janus and Jeannette were also called. “We had to say goodbye in the hospital in Tilburg. He was brain dead and could no longer be saved. He would remain a greenhouse plant forever.”

It remains unclear how the man could fall from the moving van and land on the road surface. Police also do not yet know who was driving the vehicle. For these reasons, the woman was arrested. According to Janus and Jeannette, the arrested woman is his girlfriend. “We know nothing and are in uncertainty.”

Police are calling on witnesses to come forward. The police also asks people who have dashcam images, which show a white Mercedes Benz type Citan, to hand it over.
