Man United’s Sancho: “Now I’m just starting to free myself” – Rashford & Co. fought for changes

Man United pro got off to a tough start

With a fee of 85 million euros, Jadon Sancho was the third most expensive transfer last summer. The winger left Borussia Dortmund after 137 games in which he recorded 50 goals and 64 assists. This brought with it great expectations from his new employer, Manchester United, which the 21-year-old has so far not been able to meet. There are seven direct goals involved in 31 appearances. In an interview with “sky‘ the England international spoke about the change, his form and BVB.

To this day, Sancho is grateful to the black and yellow, who in 2017 already invested 7.84 million euros for the then 17-year-old Manchester City talent. “The club tried very hard for me. Then I saw who else was playing in Dortmund. For example Christian Pulisic, who was only 19 at the time. So he was almost a role model for me. I saw him and thought, ‘That could be me too.’ Luckily, BVB gave me this chance and I think I did the same job,” said Sancho, who gave BVB the second-highest fee in the club’s history.

After the native Londoner, English youngsters continued to move to the Bundesliga, such as Reece Oxford (23), Reiss Nelson (22) and Jude Bellingham (18). However, he denied that this was due to Sancho. “I wouldn’t say that I started a trend with it, as many say. But perhaps since then other young players from England have had more confidence in choosing the club they want to play for.”

Man United professionals Rashford, Maguire & Co. campaigned for Sancho to change

After four years in Dortmund, he was drawn back to his homeland and signed a contract with the English record champions until 2026. Not only the club officials of the “Red Devils” did a convincing job, but also some colleagues from the “Three Lions”. “I’ve met Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw with the national team. They always said: ‘Come to United’. There were also guys from Chelsea or Liverpool who all tried to convince me of their club. But it only got really serious after the European Championships.”

The first weeks and months at the new club were initially sobering. Sancho had to wait for his first goal until the end of November. This was also reflected in his market value, which fell from 100 million at BVB to 85 million euros. “I’m very self-critical. It certainly wasn’t my best season, but I learned a lot. I would say that I’m only now really starting to unlock myself. I’m feeling more and more comfortable and happy,” he admitted and promised: “I can still get a lot better.”
