Only a draw vs bottom Burnley
Ralf Rangnick has suffered another setback with Manchester United. Four days after the cup embarrassment against second division FC Middlesbrough, the German coach and his team in the Premier League only drew 1-1 (1-0) at bottom FC Burnley. Manchester slipped to fifth place in the table on Tuesday evening. Paul Pogba (18′) had given Rangnick’s team the lead, but Jay Rodríguez (47′) equalized after an assist from Wout Weghorst, who arrived from Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg at the end of January.
“We actually scored three goals,” the interim coach said after the game (quoted via “Guardians”) and thus alluded to two disallowed goals. “It’s different from Friday. On the second goal that was not awarded, the linesman flagged a foul, but only 10 seconds after the incident. That was a very questionable decision, I have to say.”
But Rangnick didn’t just blame the referee. “We weren’t aggressive enough in the second half. It was clear they were going to come out and be aggressive. We allowed them to score and didn’t defend the whole situation. It was a very frustrating night for us because we should have easily won the game. In the end it was also a bit of a matter of luck. One point for such a performance is simply not enough.”
West Ham United had previously won 1-0 (0-0) against Watford FC and moved past Manchester in fourth place in the table. Relegation candidates Newcastle United defeated Everton 3-1 (1-1) and climbed to 17th place.
