2. at the Golden Boot
The rise of SSC Napoli to Scudetto favorites in Serie A and at least a co-favorite in the Champions League is related to many factors – summer signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (22) and top scorer Victor Osimhen (24) have probably acted on so far most effective. The latter, who is still under contract until 2024, opened up about his future at an awards ceremony, which he hopes will eventually take him to England.
“Playing in one of the top five leagues in the world is a great feeling for me,” said Osimhen (quoted via “The Athletic“). “A lot of people around the world think the Premier League is the best and strongest league, but now I’m in one of the best leagues in the world, Italy’s Serie A.” However, the Nigeria international said he’s “working hard to achieve my dream, one to play in the Premier League one day. But like I said, it’s a process and I want to keep that momentum and continue to perform well.”
Golden Shoe: The current status of the most successful goalscorers in Europe
Osimhen had scored at least one goal in eight straight league games before the Campania side lost 1-0 to Lazio this season on Friday, led by ex-Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri. In the race for the golden boot of the best league goal scorers in Europe, only Erling Haaland (22) is ahead of the former Wolfsburg player – but with a 16-point lead, this is relatively clear. Overall, Osimhen has scored 21 goals and four assists in 26 competitive games so far this season. The goalscorer is expected to be one of the big winners in the Serie A market value update on March 21.
For weeks, English media have linked Osimhen with Premier League sides, including Chelsea, which have been so lavish this year, and most commonly Manchester United. Erik ten Hag is said to have targeted the right-footed player as a dream player for the coming summer. It is not unlikely that Napoli will then be looking for a record sale. Gonzalo Higuaín has held the top spot in this ranking since his 90 million euro move to arch-rival Juventus in 2016. However: Osimhen’s contract expires in 2024, if he does not extend it, the next transfer window would be the last chance to collect a transfer fee in line with the market value.
