Man suspected of setting fire to chalet, woman escapes flames

A 40-year-old Ossenaar was arrested on Thursday in connection with setting fire to a chalet on Hermanusweg in Schaijk. The police made the announcement on Friday morning. The chalet suffered significant damage in the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

The chalet fire was discovered around half past four on Wednesday night. A woman called the police. She said she was sleeping and woke up to a bang. Then she saw that her chalet was on fire. According to the fire brigade, who quickly brought the fire under control, the fire could not have started just like that.

Officers then searched for a suspect. Shortly afterwards they stopped a motorist who noticed them. This driver smelled of alcohol and was indeed intoxicated. Not much later, officers received indications that this man was involved in the arson attack in Schaijk.

The police are investigating because there are indications that the fire was started. Forensic investigators are looking for clues at the crime scene this Friday. The suspect is being brought before the examining magistrate in Den Bosch. His involvement in the arson is still under investigation.
