Man stops on highway to save injured deer

A motorist saved the life of a hit deer on Wednesday night. While driving on the A50, he saw the injured deer lying on the asphalt between Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode. The driver didn’t hesitate for a moment and sprang into action.

The injured deer lay in the middle of the road. The young driver saw that the animal was still alive and stopped along the highway. He then got out and carried the injured deer to the side of the road. An oncoming truck was able to stop just in time.

On the side of the road, the driver called the animal ambulance. There he was told that all employees were out to help animals in need. The young driver therefore proposed to take the injured animal to the Brabant Wildlife Sanctuary in Ravenstein himself. With the deer on a chair in the car, the man then drove there.

The animal has been housed at the wildlife sanctuary. An employee of the shelter says that the deer is not doing well. It remains to be seen whether the animal will survive.

The animal ambulance calls the action a ‘heroic act’, but does not advise anyone to stop on the highway. ‘Call 112 immediately’, is the advice of the animal ambulance.
