Man hits cyclists and leaves them seriously injured: jail threatens

At the end of July 2022, two cyclists were seriously injured in Eindhoven after being hit by a car. The driver of the car then drove away. The man, an Eindhoven resident now 24, only reported to the police after more than a day and a half. This Tuesday he had to answer for his behavior at the court in Den Bosch. The public prosecutor took it seriously and demanded a prison sentence of nine months. The man would also have to surrender his driver’s license for a while.

The accident happened on July 30, 2022 on Mecklenburgstraat in Eindhoven, around half past five at night. The two cyclists, a woman and a man aged thirty at the time, were hit hard from behind. They then collided with two parked passenger cars and suffered serious injuries. Both still suffer from it.

The driver continued driving after the collision, even at a higher speed and on the wrong side of the road. There he crashed into a traffic island and eventually came to a stop against a lamppost. The driver was injured, but managed to get out of his badly damaged car and run away. More than 41 hours later he reported to the police. It was then no longer possible to determine whether the Eindhoven resident was under the influence of alcohol or drugs when he hit the cyclists.

The public prosecutor blames the suspect for hitting the cyclists due to very careless driving. He is also accused of leaving them in a helpless state and doing everything he could – including ignoring traffic rules – to escape the police.

The victims were seriously injured, their cyclists severely damaged:
