Man hit in the head with hockey stick, suspect has to go to jail for 3 months

A 22-year-old Eindhoven resident still has to go to jail for three months because he hit another person on the head with a hockey stick. The man lashed out hard with his stick during a night out last year. The victim from Eindhoven still suffers from the blow to his head.

The public prosecutor previously ruled that the man had to go to jail for three months, in addition, she demanded community service. But the judge finds that sentence too mild and ruled otherwise on Monday. The man is sentenced to three months in prison, gets a community service of 240 hours and has to pay the victim 16,000 euros.

No way out but hit
It all happened on October 21 last year. The suspect went out on Stratumseind with a friend. Around midnight they got a sandwich at a snack bar and there they got into an argument with a customer. Outside the fight continued, the two continued to see each other and then things got out of hand.

The suspect grabbed his hockey stick and lunged hard at the man three times. Once he hit his forehead, the man suffered a skull fracture, a brain contusion and brain haemorrhages.

According to the suspect, he wanted to defend himself because of the defiant behavior of the victim. He would have seen no other way out than hitting with his hockey stick.

No emergency weather
But according to the judge, something else can be seen on camera images. The suspect hits the victim on the arm for the first time. After that first blow, the victim turns away and looks the other way.

The suspect walks up to him, makes eye contact, and punches a second and third time. Of which once on his head. According to the judge, there was no emergency at that time.

Attempted manslaughter
The judge sees the beating on the head as attempted manslaughter. The man is still very much affected by the blow to his head. The judge also takes into account that the man did not care about the victim. He ran after his act and did not contact him later.

The judge finds no reason to hit someone on the head with a hockey stick that he was challenged by the victim.
