Man from Tournai died after fight with soldiers | Interior

A 37-year-old man from Tournai who was beaten up by soldiers two weeks ago has succumbed to his injuries. The public prosecutor’s office reported this on Tuesday.

The facts took place on the night of June 19 to 20, in front of a café in the center of the Hainaut city. Shortly after midnight, three soldiers stationed in Tournai wanted to drink another glass, but the bar owner did not let them in for an unknown reason.

When leaving the bar, an argument broke out with a passer-by, from which a fierce scuffle ensued. According to the initial elements of the investigation, a discussion about women was at the root of the argument. Two of the three soldiers would have beaten the victim. When the emergency services arrived, the man was unconscious and was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Two soldiers were placed under arrest. The public prosecutor’s office in Tournai says that the council chamber will probably reclassify that mandate to manslaughter or assault and battery without intent to kill.

The three had fled at first, but the police were able to catch them quickly. They followed a logistics course in the Tournai barracks.

Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder, herself from Tournai, has already condemned the facts. The three people involved have been suspended pending further investigation, she said.
