Man from Mensingeweer gets prison sentence and treatment for trying to strangle his ex-girlfriend

The 54-year-old man who tried to strangle his ex-girlfriend in Mensingeweer in January has been sentenced to 3 years in prison and mandatory treatment in a clinic.

The sentence is lower than required by the Public Prosecution Service, because the court sees no evidence of premeditated strangulation. According to the judges, the man grabbed his ex-girlfriend by the throat in the early morning of January 16 this year. It doesn’t make it attempted murder, but attempted manslaughter.

The couple has already separated during that period, but the woman temporarily stays on a friendly basis at his home in Mensingeweer. The man strikes several times that morning. On the last attempt, she had already dialed the emergency number 112 on her phone for safety reasons and was able to call just in time.

Strangulation attempt heard live in the control room

The strangulation and suffocation attempt that follows can be heard live in the control room. Agents quickly arrive at the house and the man opens the door himself. Without emotions he says that there has been a big fight. The officers find the woman unconscious on the floor. She regains consciousness a short time later.

The man from Mensingeweer committed the offenses under the influence of alcohol and heavy medicines. He also suffers from several mental disorders. That is why the court also finds it important that the man, in addition to serving a prison sentence, must be treated for a long time. He is sentenced to 3 years in prison, one year of which is suspended. He is also required to complete a trajectory at a clinic. The victim will receive 6,000 euros in compensation.
