Man from Enkhuizen caught emptying traps with eel

A 35-year-old man from Enkhuizen was arrested yesterday on suspicion of illegal eel fishing. He would have secretly cleared the nets of a professional fisherman. The man was arrested in the act with a live eel in his hands.

The Hoorn police and the fish poaching team of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority tracked down the man after several reports from a professional fisherman who noticed that his traps had been constantly emptied.

The man fished for eel (eel). That is a protected fish species. It is illegal to fish for eel without permission according to the fisheries law.

Eelfish

The police soon tracked down a 35-year-old man from Enkhuizen. The man was arrested red-handed in Enkhuizen. At that moment he had a still living eel in his hands. The fish has been released into open water.

The police then also searched the house of the suspect, where a large amount of eel traps and live and frozen eel were found. Research has shown that this eel was killed by administering salt. An act that has not been allowed to be applied for years.

The man is suspected of violating the Fisheries Act, the Nature Protection and Embezzlement Act.
