It was a rat catcher who found the body in the Nieuwpoort-Dunkirk canal in Adinkerke. The emergency services arrived on the scene, but the man appeared to have already died.
There was uncertainty about his identity and cause of death. The medical examiner therefore had an autopsy carried out to gain more clarity.
