Man drives his car into the IJ and is rescued by bystanders

Early this evening, a man drove his car into the water near the Galgenveld Bridge in Noord. Two bystanders saw the incident and prevented the car from sinking further under water. “The man was checked by the ambulance and taken to hospital. His condition is unknown,” said a police spokesperson.

Several emergency services arrived on the scene and an air ambulance was also called. It is unclear how the man ended up with the car in the water.

Images show that bystanders and emergency services hold the vehicle to prevent it from sinking further. “The bystanders who saw it happen alerted the emergency services and held the car until they arrived,” the spokesperson said.

The vehicle was removed from the water by a rescuer using a crane.
