The man, Connor Cato, was pulled over by a police patrol in September for a speeding violation. He tells this to WSAV, the television station of his home city of Savannah (in the American state of Georgia). A few weeks later he received a letter with the remarkably high traffic fine.
He suspected the fine was a mistake and called the authorities to inquire. Connor was shocked again when he was told he had to pay or face court. But afterwards, both the fine and the phone call turned out to be a misunderstanding.
In the state of Georgia, anyone driving 35 miles per hour over the speed limit must appear before a judge. And the amount of the fine? According to city officials, that is purely a symbolic amount. The actual fine cannot exceed 1,000 dollars (approximately 950 euros).
