Man caught after trick at self-checkout: these are other crazy thefts

Two shoplifters were caught at the Albert Heijn XL in Tilburg on Friday when they wanted to make off with 600 euros worth of groceries. Their trick: using a receipt from a previous store visit at the self-checkout. It is an example of how the thieves’ guild continues to look for ways to steal. In this article we take a look at some crazy thefts in Brabant.

Battery AED appears to be missing during resuscitation
Your life would depend on it: an AED with the battery removed. As a result, a woman in Schaijk could not be resuscitated with the AED. Manager Jan Albers suspected that the battery had been stolen. “How does someone think of removing the battery from an AED?” he wondered out loud. The woman who had to be resuscitated with the device has died. According to Albers, she would not have survived even with a working AED.

These thieves steal heavy loot
Volunteers at the mock airport and museum De Kiek in Riel were furious when they discovered that thieves had broken into a bunker. Two unique German training bombs, gas bottles and helmets were missing and the bunker’s furnishings were destroyed. It must have been quite a job for the thieves to get the bombs out of the bunker. The concrete explosives weigh 250 kilos each. It is unclear why the items were removed, because according to the museum they have little value.

Precious cheese
For the second time in a few years, cheese makers Gerda van Dorp and her husband Joost from Fijnaart were the victims of a theft. In 2022, thieves stole 161 cheeses from their company and in 2023 it was stolen again. “The burglars broke open the store with great violence. Then they took all the cheeses from our storage. I don’t know exactly how many there are. We haven’t counted it yet,” Gerda told Omroep Brabant after the second theft. According to the interest group, this is well-organized crime. The stolen cheeses would often go to Eastern Europe.

Omroep Brabant made a video about the first time Gerda and Joost’s cheese was stolen.

Kidnapping children is going too far for this thief
A car thief thought he would only make off with an all-terrain vehicle and canoes belonging to a family from Valkenswaard. During his act, he discovered that he had also taken the family’s children. They were in the backseat. The thief was probably so shocked by this that he abandoned the Toyota about 16 kilometers away and fled. The children were fine. It is not known whether the thief has yet been traced.

Stealing a palm tree with your mobility scooter
It was a strange scene on the Oude Rijksweg in Best: a man walking past a mobility scooter with a large palm tree in a pot on the seat. The police were also surprised and therefore started to investigate. With success, because the man turned out to have stolen the palm tree (worth 345 euros) from the nearby Hornbach.
