Man arrested for involvement in death of Cas Steenbergen from De Schiphorst. The suspect is 20 years old and comes from De Wolden

In the investigation into the death of Cas Steenbergen from De Schiphorst (municipality of Meppel), a 20-year-old man from De Wolden was arrested on Monday. The police report this.

According to a spokesperson, the police suspect that Cas was assaulted when he wanted to cycle home last July after a party at the annual horse competition in Veeningen. “The role of the suspect is being investigated.” The family was notified Monday morning. “We are relieved, but it is still exciting to see how this will develop further,” says mother Albertine Steenbergen.

After a party in Veeningen at CH De Wolden on the night of July 16 to 17, 2022, 23-year-old Cas was seriously injured. His parents found him unconscious and covered in blood in bed the morning after the party. His mother immediately started CPR. Cas never regained consciousness. He died in hospital on August 15, a month later.

For a long time the police assumed it was an accident. Recently, new information came in, reopening the investigation. The police will make a call in the program on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 Investigation Requested and called on, among others, a man in a gray sweater and a blonde woman in white to report.

Multiple arrests not excluded

After this call, the investigation received 16 tips. “This has contributed enormously to the research. Several witnesses have also come forward, including the man in the gray sweater and the woman in white. All this led to new information, after which the suspect was arrested. It concerns a different person than the man in the gray sweater previously described by the police.”

The 20-year-old man is suspected of involvement in the assault that ultimately led to Cas’s death. He is stuck and in complete restraints. This means that he may only have contact with a lawyer. “The investigation is not yet completed with the arrest. Witnesses are still being spoken to and the investigation is still ongoing. Multiple arrests cannot be ruled out.”
