A 37-year-old man from Schoonebeek was arrested last night for the fire at the swimming pool De Slagen in his hometown. The police are investigating whether the suspect also has anything to do with the many fires and destruction that were committed in the village last week.
“We were not able to catch him in the act, but the man came into view last night during an unobtrusive surveillance in the village,” said a police spokesman.
Schoonebeek has recently been ravaged by several fires and destruction. Last weekend a fire was set at the NAM building De Boô. In addition, there were also fires this week at the Burgemeester Osselaan, at a house on the Sieversmaat and at the sports hall. In addition, some windows were also smashed by the pool.
“That was reason for us to do more surveillance in the village, striking and unobtrusive,” said the spokesperson. “We have now arrested this 37-year-old man. He is in custody and is being interrogated. We are very curious whether he is involved in the previous incidents, we are investigating that.”
The police are looking for information in the investigation. “Information is still welcome. For example, has someone come home at strange times or did someone have a burning smell around them? We would like to hear more about that.”
