Man arrested after explosion in Oosterwolde apartment complex

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the gas explosion last night in an apartment complex in Oosterwolde. The man is heard about his role in the explosion. “The investigation must show whether the suspect has shown culpable behavior,” the police said.

The explosion took place around 6 p.m. in one of the homes of the building on Gijenham. A 21-year-old man was injured in the incident. He has been taken to a hospital. The building was evacuated.

The explosion happened in a residence on the top floor of the flat and caused cracks in the side wall. The complex was heavily damaged and expert investigations have shown that the building is unsafe for now.

Replacement housing will be arranged for the evacuated residents. It concerns about twenty residents of a total of thirteen homes in the complex on Gijenham, as was previously known. Tomorrow, the municipality of Ooststellingwerf, to which the village belongs, and housing company WoonFriesland will see what the next steps are.

During the evacuation, the police came across a small cannabis plantation in another home. As soon as the situation in the building is safe, the police will investigate further.
