The Hamrun Spartan’s writing a curious chapter of royal class history against Vilnius. The club only comes on after 28 penalty shot.

Maltese champion Hamrun Spartan wrote a curious chapter football history in the first qualification round for the Champions League. The club prevailed against the Lithuanian representative of Zalgiris Vilnius after a record penalty shootout with 28 attempts. In the end it was 11:10, the last pen for Hamrun converted the Montenegrin Jovan Cadjenovic. After extra time it was 2-0, the Spartans made up for the first leg defeat (0: 2).

More penalties have never been needed in a qualification game for the premier class to determine the winner (source: transfermarkt.de). In the second round of the 2010/11 season, it was at 9: 8 of Lech Poznan against FK Keshla 22 attempts, in the first round of the 1993/94 between NK Olimpija and disco Riga (10:11) 24.
