Mallorca puts an end to booze tourism: first bars closed | Instagram VTM NEWS

The extremely popular Spanish holiday island of Mallorca wants to put an end to so-called booze tourism. Authorities closed the first bars and more are closing soon. The measures are mainly aimed at catering establishments that are popular with Germans and British. According to Spanish media, there has never been such a strict action.

All kinds of excesses had been a thorn in the side of the regional government of Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands for years. For example, alcohol is served or sold to minors, even if they can barely stand. Bars and dance clubs send scantily clad young girls in bikinis or underwear out to attract customers. Hordes of tourists try to get drunk as quickly as possible.

To start with, eight bars are now closing as a precaution. They must take into account permanent closure. The authorities base themselves on the so-called anti-booze tourism law, which has been in force since the beginning of 2020 but has only recently been actually applied due to corona.

Four bars are in the Ballermann nightlife spot, which is especially popular with German visitors. The other four catering establishments are located in the British party stronghold of Magaluf. More than 90 investigations into violations of the law are still ongoing. “It is the first time that bars in the Balearic Islands have been closed for such reasons,” said Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela. He announced more sanctions and measures: “We say enough to a certain form of tourism.”
