Mallorca main suspect Sanil B. continues to deny that he has anything to do with the murder of Carlo Heuvelman. It’s been said a few times before, but he insists he didn’t hit or kick Carlo or even see Carlo. “But what I didn’t do is unfortunately not on video. I really prayed that that image would surface,” he says in court today.
When it comes to the manslaughter of Carlo Heuvelman, the young Hilversummer also says he has a lot of questions. “But unfortunately no answers,” he sighs. “But I did doubt myself too, especially when the police pressured me and told me that DNA traces had been found on my shoes. I thought: did I do it? But I’m sure it wasn’t so is.”
He goes on to add: “I’m speaking one hundred percent the truth, I swear. I get that there are several pieces of the puzzle to prove. A puzzle with pieces that may not fit together, but if you press hard enough, they fit and seem it’s a perfect whole. But only later do you see that head and ass are wrong. That’s the best way to describe my situation.”
Sanil B. further stated in court very clearly and calmly, he showed an open attitude. Occasionally he had to raise his voice to say that ‘he really didn’t do anything.
Multiple proofs
But there is certainly evidence against him. Today it appears in court that there are several witness statements that designate Sanil B. as involved in Carlo’s death. Nevertheless, experts doubt by far the most important witness mentioned in the file: based on her interrogation and the facts, her testimony is even labeled as ‘not reliable’.
In addition, there are some anonymous statements. One of these statements is very specific about the group and even seems to say more than just the night in question. A statement that may well come from the group of friends themselves. In that statement, Sanil B. is designated as the perpetrator, he himself continues to deny emphatically.
“I’m not going to say that it happens exactly like that, because it would suddenly suit me. I only say what I know for sure”
Exculpatory statements
Other witnesses make exculpatory statements for B. and say that he was not the one who kicked Carlo Heuvelman, but that someone else did. That also seems to be seen on a video. That video starts with the moment that a girl just takes care of Carlo Heuvelman, right after he falls. The young Hilversummer is then in a different place, fighting with a friend of Carlo.
It is striking that the young Hilversummer refutes the statements against him, but is also not necessarily firm about the exculpatory statements. “I’m not going to say that it happens exactly like that, because it would suddenly suit me. I’m only saying what I know for sure and that is that I have not touched Carlo.”
Other suspects
Sanil B. suggests that the court would also love to know who is responsible for Carlo’s death. “If you’ve done this and kept this to yourself, I can’t imagine you can live with that. That must start to gnaw at you. You have something very bad on your conscience,” he says. “I can well imagine that this must be terrible for Carlo’s relatives.”
Text continues below the video.
He also does not have a clear answer about who handed out the fatal blows and kicks. According to him, it could be someone from his group of friends, but also someone who ‘accidentally got involved in the fight’.
“But someone from my group of friends just doesn’t make sense to me. So much has been said, a lot of conversations have been tapped from all of us and from our parents and brothers or sisters. And really without us knowing it, because for the same money I still tapped. Nowhere in those conversations was it mentioned who did it, I think we really don’t know it all.”
Carlo .’s DNA trace
What else there is in evidence against Sanil B. is the DNA trace of Carlo Heuvelman that was found on one of his shoes. There were doubts about this beforehand, but today it turned out that there is hardly any doubt anymore whether DNA really belongs to Carlo.
But how it ended up on the shoes of Sanil B. is still a mystery. So far there is no answer.
The trial continues after the weekend. On Monday, the three main suspects – in addition to Sanil B. Hein B. and Mees T. – will appear again, together with Daan van S.. Then their personal circumstances are discussed and various psychologists are heard.
