Long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo worries about the children and young people whose leisure activities are suffering from the corona pandemic.
“We have to come up with something to mitigate these consequences,” said Mihambo in an interview with “Münchner Merkur” and “tz”: “It is society’s task to get all members on board.”
The pandemic reveals “that we will not succeed. Nobody should be forgotten in a crisis, you can only get through such times together,” said the sportswoman of the year.
For children it is “even more difficult to forego sport and social contacts. We have to make up for this loss in order to avoid permanent damage.”
Mihambo has been working with the “Malaikas Herzsprung” association since summer 2020 to provide athletic and social education for children. She wanted “to give as many primary school children as possible the financial framework for membership in the athletics club”.
“I am incredibly pleased that I can support the development of young people with my foundation,” said Mihambo: “Children are born without prejudice. Only through socialization does racism, discrimination or even bullying arise. We have to approach others more, more listen, don’t pigeonhole people right away. “
