How do bloggers actually make their money?
In the last decade in particular, blogging has become more and more popular, and new blogs on all kinds of topics have been published. Many bloggers turned their hobby into their main or part-time job, but society smiled at them for a long time. Contrary to popular belief, however, it’s entirely possible to make a decent living as a blogger. But how do bloggers actually make their money?
Bloggers have a variety of ways to make money. At first glance, a blog hardly differs from a website, so blogs can use the same business models. Bloggers can deposit advertising banners from various providers on their website. If a visitor now clicks on the advertisement, the blogger receives money from the client. Another way to generate money from clicks are affiliate links. These links can be linked to a product featured on the blog, such as a shirt on a fashion blog. If the blog visitor clicks on the link and actually buys the item, the blogger receives a percentage of the sale price from the company in return. The more people buy a product through this link, the more the blogger earns. A high number of blog visitors is therefore decisive for the monthly income for both advertising options.
Furthermore, bloggers can post so-called advertorials on their blog, in which they present and advertise the products of a certain brand, for which they receive a commission. They can also offer coaching in their specialist area or work as a consultant. Otherwise, there are a wide variety of jobs for bloggers that they get through professional contacts or their level of fame: invitations to events, engagement as a testimonial or a job as an actor or presenter.
Is it worth running a blog in times of Instagram and Co.?
This opens up a multitude of sources of income for bloggers. The success and the amount of monthly earnings are closely related to the popularity and the number of visitors of the individual blog. Even in times of influencers, Instagram and YouTube, the competition is not getting any less. Precisely because of this media presence of Instagram, they have even receded into the background.
Whether a blog is worthwhile from a financial point of view in the long term therefore depends heavily on the blogger himself and the individual choice of topic. Longtime blogger Peer Wandiger believes that if you find the right niche and put the work into the project, blogging will be successful. Wandiger presents a basic requirement for earning money with your own blog on his blog “Self-employed on the Internet”: “You have to like to write.”
