‘Make dolls a little better’

Kalvijn hopes that the historic megaflop Avastars will return for a second season on SBS 6. “Then I assume that the faces will be a bit better and hopefully it will be fatter,” he says.

In the history of SBS 6, few programs have flopped as badly as Avastars, John de Mol’s TV show in which digital puppets compete against each other while singing and dancing. At one point less than 100,000 people watched Kalvijn’s show, which is indescribably low for Friday evening prime time.

Calvin wants to continue

Apparently Kalvijn has no idea how it all works exactly in Hilversum, because he now says in front of the camera of The Telegraph hoping for a second season. “I would love to do season two. Then I assume that the faces are a bit better and then hopefully it will be fatter. Then hopefully we will do it again.”

It seems Kalvijn ‘nice’, but a program with such poor viewing figures can of course not come back. “Yes, I think it’s a shame that more people haven’t watched it, but then I just don’t think it’s fun enough, I think.”

‘A bit f*t’

Doesn’t he think it’s terrible that his presentation debut has flopped so mercilessly? Kalvijn: “No, I actually liked it. Yes, I actually liked it. When we started it, when Talpa asked, I said, ‘I like doing it, because it’s kind of hit or miss.’ Either it’s a 9 or a 2.”

John de Mol has been thinking about this program for more than twenty years. “Yes, yes, he did put a lot of time into it, yes. That’s a bit shitty. Haha. But yes, the best man is not really awake in my opinion. But yes, I do like that I did learn a lot. That is valuable.”

Second season

According to Kalvijn, there is still no clarity about a second season. “Then I have to ask John de Mol. Then I have to call him, but I’m not going to do that now. I haven’t heard anything yet, but I would like to. I like that. Do you know what it is? The technology is not what we wanted…”

Um, that sounds like an understatement. It just looked like the 20-year-old game of The Sims. He agrees. “I understand that, yes.”
