Majority of House of Representatives for extra 40 million to tackle bottleneck at Meppel

The House of Representatives is releasing an additional 40 million euros in total to solve the ‘bottle neck’ on the railway near Meppel. All trains that travel to the North must go via Meppel. There are often disruptions on the route, an average of nine hours per week.

This concerns NS trains that run from Zwolle through Drenthe to Groningen and Leeuwarden. The trains between Zwolle and Emmen run on a different track.

NSC, VVD, BBB, D66 and JA21 now also support the proposal of the Christian Union, GroenLinks-PvdA and the CDA. The money should include an extra platform and extra switches. Previously, 35 million euros had already been made available, but an additional 40 million was needed.

Various parties believe that investments in infrastructure in the North are too meager. The provinces themselves have also been calling for more money for roads and public transport for a long time.

The House of Representatives will continue to debate the budget of the Ministry of Infrastructure today and Thursday. Then there will also be a vote.
