Major malfunction shuts down Amsterdam emergency services communication system

Walkie-talkie system C2000, with which emergency services communicate with each other, is experiencing a major malfunction tonight. In various regions, including Amsterdam, the emergency services had to temporarily switch to a different way of communicating. The malfunction is not yet causing problems in the provision of assistance in Amsterdam, according to a police spokesman. The emergency number can still be reached.

At around 7:45 p.m., the fault was scaled up to GRIP 1, with the emergency services cooperating in crisis situations in a coordinated manner. In Amsterdam, a team gathered for this purpose at the police headquarters.

Around 9.30 pm, a police spokesman reported that the C2000 system in the Amsterdam region is working properly again. “However, we do not know whether the system will continue to function properly in the coming hours. As a precaution, we are therefore now agreeing which steps we can take.”

Staggering system

The C2000 communication system has been a concern for some time. In mid-April, Minister Dilan Yesilgöz of Justice and Security announced that she expects the problems with the faltering system to increase in the coming years.

The communication system has failed several times in recent months. The lack of communication can in some cases lead to life-threatening situations.
