Major fire in building with carnival cars in Oldenzaal, prince car heavily damaged | Inland

A fire broke out on Thursday evening in a building on Helmichstraat in Oldenzaal, where several carnival cars are parked. This would have been caused by work on one of the floats. No one was injured, but the prince’s carriage of an association has completely burned down. “Very sad,” said the chairman.

The fire started around nine o’clock, during work on one of the carnival cars, in the middle of the shed. It is not yet known exactly how this could have happened.

People who were present in the shed first tried to extinguish the fire themselves, but the flames quickly spread to the roof, according to a spokesperson for the Twente fire brigade, after which considerable panic ensued. That is why we scaled up to a major fire, and several units from the region came to Oldenzaal.

No injuries, but damage to cars

Everyone managed to escape in time, the spokeswoman said. The fire brigade extinguished the fire, including with a cherry picker, through the roof. At around a quarter to ten, the fire was under control. No one was hurt.

There was damage to several vehicles. According to the spokesperson, one of them has burned down considerably: it concerns the Prince’s wagon, belonging to OCV De Oelewappers, an association that is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. “Very sad”, responds Joris Roord, new this year as chairman of that association. He wasn’t there when it happened. He could not say what it means for their participation in the parade on Thursday evening. “We have to see if we can ride a worthy parade.”

The great Twente carnival parade, as the parade in Oldenzaal is called, will be held again on April 10 for the first time since 2019. This was canceled in 2020 due to the bad weather, in 2021 the corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works.
