A fire broke out in ‘the AEB bunker’ at the Waste Energy Company (AEB) on the Australiahavenweg in the Western Docklands this evening around 7 p.m. Waste processing of residual waste takes place there. “We have scaled up to a major fire to have sufficient resources available to extinguish it,” said a fire brigade spokesperson.
It is unclear what caused the fire in the AEB bunker. Together with the AEB, the fire brigade is working to dismantle the waste mountain with large cranes. “We can then start extinguishing the fire effectively, as a lot of water is needed,” the spokesperson said. The fire was under control around 9:40 PM and was still being extinguished.
According to the spokesperson, it will take some time before the fire is extinguished. “There is poor visibility in the bunker and that makes it difficult for cranes.” The fire brigade recommends closing windows and doors and switching off ventilation if you experience smoke. The smoke development mainly takes place in the building, but some smoke was released earlier in the evening. No one was injured.
It is not the first time that a fire has broken out at the AEB. On May 3 this year, a fire broke out at the company an explosion place.
