Major fire at paper recycling company in Zaandam, smoke crosses the North Sea Canal

A fire broke out this morning in a warehouse of a paper recycling company on Sluispolderweg in Zaandam. The fire brigade is massively present to fight the fire.

The fire broke out in a paper shredder, after which the flames also got a grip on the paper bales around it, according to a spokesperson for the Zaanstreek-Waterland Safety Region.

The fire releases thick smoke, which blows over the North Sea Canal towards the Westelijk Havengebied. That is why the Amsterdam-Amstelland fire brigade also warns residents to close windows and doors if nuisance is experienced.

The Zaandam fire brigade receives help from units from the area. There are currently enough firefighters in the shed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

As far as is known, no injuries were reported in the fire, the spokesperson said. Nothing is known about the cause yet.
