Plenty of time for squad corrections
The 18 Bundesliga clubs have now invested around 373 million euros in their squads. In the summer of 2021 it was a total of 425 million euros – but seen over the entire transfer period. As in the Premier League, the German upper house is well on the way to surpassing last year’s mark. Christian Heidel, sports director at 1. FSV Mainz 05 and previously responsible for transfers for 14.3 million on the arrival side and 23.8 million on the departure side, does not expect the really big transfer offensive until winter.
Due to the Winter World Cup, the winter break for Heidel and his counterparts starts in mid-November and lasts ten weeks. That’s why he expects “the biggest transfer window of all time,” the 59-year-old told Kicker. Then, Heidel thinks, many clubs will want to correct their squads.
Bundesliga clubs spent the most in a winter transfer window in 2019/20: €208.4 million. Unsurprisingly, the Premier League holds the record with 561.4 million in the 2017/18 season.
