FSV Mainz 05 has separated from coach Jan Siewert. The Bundesliga team, which has not won in eleven competitive games, announced this on Monday. The successor is scheduled to be presented on Tuesday afternoon.

Update 1:53 p.m.: According to “Bild”, this is Benjamin Hoffmann, who had already succeeded Siewert as head coach of the Mainz regional league team. The 44-year-old, previously with the FSV U19 team for a long time, is a logical decision given Mainz’s coaching decisions in the past with numerous homegrown players or former professionals.

“We expressly thank Jan for his commitment. He took on the task at a difficult time with a lot of passion and meticulousness and gave the team good impetus with his work,” explained sports director Christian Heidel. “Unfortunately, these have not been reflected in a fundamental trend reversal or results. Instead, the situation in the relegation battle has gotten significantly worse for us in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step in order to be able to bring about a positive turnaround.”

Siewert initially followed Bo Svensson as interim coach at the beginning of November. Shortly before Christmas, he received a contract until June 30, 2026. Apart from his first game (2-0 against RB Leipzig), the former coach of Mainz’s second team did not win a game and drew six times. Sports director Martin Schmidt recently announced a detailed analysis.

Siewert explained: “I would like to thank Mainz 05 for almost four years, it is a special club for me. Many colleagues have become friends here. Together with my coaching team, I did everything I could to ensure that the club could stay in the league, but unfortunately we also lacked the necessary luck. I wish the team and club all the best – and above all that they can still hold the league.”

If he leaves the club completely, doesn’t go back to the U23 and no direct announcement of his successor can be made, that sounds like an external solution to me. …
