“An insane player”
On Friday evening homegrown Nelson Weiper scored in added time for 1. FSV Mainz 05 to make it 4-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach – a historic conclusion. At 17 years, eleven months and seven days, the DFB junior is the youngest Bundesliga goalscorer in the “zero fives”. Weiper ousted André Schürrle, who netted for the first time in 2009 at the age of 18 years and ten months.
“This is madness. His third brief assignment. You always knew he’d crack. It’s a matter of time before he comes in with us,” sports director Martin Schmidt praised on “DAZN” the offensive talent, who missed the top 20 of the youngest goal scorers in the Bundesliga rankings by just a few days. “There’s an amazing player coming up,” said Schmidt about the winner of the Fritz Walter medals (U17 category 2022) in gold, who is still tied to Mainz until 2025.

Mainz 05 wants to extend the contract with top scorer Lee
Mainz 05 also want to keep Jae-sung Lee, an early contract extension with the team’s top scorer Karim Onisiwo (30) is being sought. “It’s clear that you want to keep such a player. The talks are already running in the background. We’re not from yesterday,” Schmidt made clear after the win against Gladbach.
Lee took the lead on Friday night with his seventh goal of the season, increasing his scorer to ten and paving the way to success. The 30-year-old international from South Korea came from the second division team Holstein Kiel in the summer of 2021 and has a contract with Mainz until 2024.

“It’s his second Bundesliga season, now he scores regularly. A player of his age also knows that if he feels good and things are going well, then you have to take that with you as long as you can,” said Schmidt. The Swiss therefore sees a good chance of keeping Lee: “He knows what he has in Mainz 05. There is a lot of calm from both sides and an effort for us to come together.”
