Option to stay in summer
Niklas Tauer is leaving Schalke 04 six months before the end of the loan and joining Eintracht Braunschweig. BTSV officially confirmed the transfer on Wednesday: Initially, the 22-year-old will also be on loan until the summer, which can then be extended via an option. The defensive all-rounder is under contract with regular and youth club Mainz 05 until 2025; if he stays in Braunschweig for a longer period of time, this would have to be extended.
“Niklas hasn’t had an easy time at Schalke recently, but we are absolutely convinced of his qualities. He can be used in a variety of ways, but we see him strongest in the center of midfield. He was also able to gain match practice at the highest national level with FSV Mainz 05. We are sure that Niklas will help us,” said sports director Benjamin Kessel about Braunschweig’s first winter transfer.
Tauer moved to Schalke a year ago and only played twice for the Royal Blues. For Lower Saxony, who are currently in relegation trouble at 17th place in the table, he wants to “stand on the pitch and help out as often as possible. I was able to play in the Eintracht Stadium once this season and I have very positive memories of the good atmosphere in the stands.”
