Small fee flows
Bartosch Gaul leaves 1. FSV Mainz 05 II and becomes the new coach of the Polish first division club Górnik Zabrze. Both clubs confirmed this on Thursday evening. According to the “Bild” newspaper, the Ekstraklasa club pays a small fee, which should be less than 100,000 euros. Gaul, who is said to have been the first to be contacted by ex-DFB striker Lukas Podolski, who plays for Górnik, switched from Schalke’s youth team to the Mainz youth division in 2015, where he has been the second team in a total of 135 games over the past four years (points average: 1.39) supervised. In the past season of the Regionalliga Südwest, Gaul and his team took fifth place.
“Bartosch Gaul approached us with a specific desire to move to Górnik Zabrze in his native country. We agreed to this with mixed feelings. With a smile on his face, because Bartosch is the next coach trained and developed in our club to make the leap to the top division, and this successful coach education is one of our central goals,” said youth director Volker Kersting. “But we let him go with a crying eye because we are losing a very competent coach and person of integrity in Bartosch.”
Gaul added: “It’s really not easy for me to say goodbye after seven years. I had a fantastic time in Mainz and am very grateful to the club for the opportunity to work and develop here. But I felt like it was now time for the next step. For me, moving to a traditional club like Górnik Zabrze in my native country is a great opportunity. I would like to thank those responsible at Mainz 05 for their understanding – and of course I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the club.”
