Mainz 05 fires coach Jan Siewert

There had recently been speculation about the separation. The club has now confirmed the personnel decision.

The Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05, which is in danger of relegation, has separated from coach Jan Siewert. This step was taken by the table 17th. announced on Monday. Siewert only replaced the hapless Bo Svensson at the beginning of November last year, but was unable to initiate a turnaround. There was only one win in twelve games; Mainz have been waiting for a success for three months.

“We expressly thank Jan for his commitment. He took on the task at a difficult time with a lot of passion and meticulousness and gave the team good impulses with his work. Unfortunately, these were not reflected in a fundamental turnaround or results,” says the sports director Christian Heidel quoted in the club statement.

Heidel continued: “Instead, the situation in the relegation battle has gotten significantly worse for us in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step in order to be able to bring about a positive turnaround.”

For Siewert it is a farewell to Mainz after four years. Before taking over the position of head coach, he worked in the youth sector and as coach of the 05er second team. “Together with my coaching team, I did everything I could to ensure that the club could stay in the league, but unfortunately we also lacked the necessary luck. I wish the team and the club all the best – and above all that they can still stay in the league,” was his farewell statement.

With a gap of four points to relegation place 16, Mainz is in acute danger of relegation. The club was last relegated from the Bundesliga in 2006/2007. Coach at the time: a certain Jürgen Klopp.
