After a comeback from injury
Homegrown player Jonathan Burkardt will remain with 1. FSV Mainz 05 beyond the end of the season. The 23-year-old signed a new working paper on Monday until June 30, 2027. Previously, the attacker was one of the most valuable Bundesliga players with an expiring contract with a market value of 7 million euros.
Burkardt made the jump to the Mainz professionals in the summer of 2018 and has since played 98 games for the “zero fives”, in which he contributed 18 goals and nine assists. The 2021 U21 European champion last celebrated his comeback on the pitch in November after a break of over a year due to a knee injury.

“Despite his young age as a footballer, Jonny Burkardt is already an influential player and character for Mainz 05. With his goal threat, his footballing instinct, his speed runs, but also his run-intensive game in our pressing, he is an extremely versatile player like no other embodies our Mainz football. With his development, he also symbolizes our successful training of young talent. And he is a positive, down-to-earth leader and team player who is not easily thrown off track. He had a difficult time due to his injury, but he fought back admirably. We are very happy to have him back on the pitch – and of course that we can continue to retain him,” said sports director Christian Heidel.
Burkardt added: “I am very grateful to those in charge at Mainz 05 and also to the fans for the trust, support and patience that I experienced during the difficult time of the injury break. Now that I’m fit again and can look forward positively, it’s the right time to extend my contract. I wanted to wait for this moment. Next summer I’ll be a zero-five player for ten years. I’m very happy in my club and I’m eager to do my part so that we can turn this season into a positive together in the second half of the season.”
