FSV’s top scorer
Jonathan Burkardt can also imagine staying at FSV Mainz 05 for a longer period of time. The 21-year-old center forward explained this in an interview with “Kicker” and emphasized that his future decision would be based on the sporting perspective in the next season. “Where’s the best place for me? That can of course also be very, very good in Mainz,” said Burkardt, who is the top scorer in his team this season with 13 goals in 34 games.
Burkardt’s contract with the “zero fives” is valid until June 2024, and he only extended it last year. “Mainz 05 is always an issue for me and I would of course give that some thought,” said the right footer about a possible extension of the working paper. So far, however, he has “not at all” dealt with the coming season. “In the next week or two I will be sitting down with my advisor.”
Head coach Bo Svensson also played a role in his decision. “In addition to the fact that I currently have a regular place here, that is another aspect that speaks for Mainz: having a coach who knows me, who knows how to use me. Bo Svensson uses me centrally on offense. Before that I played a lot on the outside or even a couple of times on the right back. And I also notice in my day-to-day work that he knows me inside out, so he knows exactly what I can do to improve further.”

Burkardt is having the best season of his professional career and has scored in double figures for the first time in the Bundesliga. As a result of his performance, his market value also increased from 6.5 to 17 million euros. “I would like to add a few more goals. I didn’t set an exact number. But there could have been more in the last few games, that’s annoying. On the other hand, you have to appreciate hitting double digits. That is not a matter of course. But I definitely don’t want to stop because I’m on ten goals.”
In Flick’s field of vision: is Burkardt still jumping on the World Cup train?
The U21 European champion has already come into the focus of national coach Hansi Flick, but in return for his teammate Anton Stach (23) it was not enough for a nomination. That’s why the most valuable German non-national player is cautious about his chances of jumping on the World Cup train. “It depends on how I start next season. It’s all about my own performance anyway. I’m not thinking about how I can get to the World Cup or whether it might have been more difficult at a World Cup in summer, that’s not in my head,” said the U21 captain.
